Reflecting on Nickelodeon: Keke Palmer and her mother’s candid conversation
A trip down memory lane
Keke Palmer recently invited her mother, Sharon, to join her on the “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer” podcast. The episode was a heartfelt journey through Keke’s early days as a child actor, particularly her time on Nickelodeon’s “True Jackson, VP.” The show, which aired from 2008 to 2011, was a significant part of Keke’s career, but it wasn’t without its challenges.
The unsettling atmosphere on set
During their conversation, Keke and Sharon touched upon the uncomfortable environment created by Dan Schneider, a prominent figure at Nickelodeon who has faced numerous allegations of misconduct. Although “True Jackson, VP” was not one of Schneider’s creations, Sharon recalled the uneasy feeling she had whenever she was on the studio lot with her daughter.
“I honestly do remember you having a lot to say about the Dan Schneider sets,” Keke remarked. “I remember you feeling a way about Nickelodeon.”
Sharon’s response was candid and revealing:
“My honest opinion is I thought the whole atmosphere of the Dan Schneider set was very weird, very cultish. The parents were very secretive, and I honestly thought they all took themselves way too seriously.”
A stepping stone, not the destination
Sharon also reflected on Keke’s career trajectory, noting that Nickelodeon was just one stop on her journey. Keke had already established herself in the film industry before joining the network.
“I always looked at you being at Nickelodeon as being a stopping station,” Sharon said. “You didn’t get your start on Nickelodeon or Disney. You were blessed and fortunate enough to work in adult situations and kid situations. My mentality about the entertainment business wasn’t that Disney Channel or Nickelodeon was the end all to be all, but a lot of the parents did.”
The dark side of child stardom
The conversation took a somber turn as they discussed the case of Drake Bell, who was sexually abused by Nickelodeon acting coach Brian Peck. Sharon saw parallels between Bell’s experience and her own with Keke.
“When I saw the Drake story, it just broke my heart because I could see how his parents got trapped,” Sharon shared.
Keke added her perspective, acknowledging the protective measures her mother took:
“In my experiences with you in this industry, I had moments where people tried to push us away from each other or try to come in between us. You never would allow that kind of thing to go down. It created tension in our relationship – I definitely felt overly controlled and confined and almost like I was in a prison sometimes. But when I look back, I feel like you were really just being protective of me.”
Calls for greater parental supervision
In light of the allegations against Schneider and Peck, many former Nickelodeon stars have advocated for increased parental supervision on sets. Ariana Grande, who starred in Schneider’s “Victorious” and “Sam & Cat,” voiced her support for this on the “Podcrushed” podcast.
“Parents should be allowed to be wherever they want to be” on sets where child actors are prominently featured, Grande stated.
