The truth serum was one of the first ideas Sloane and Glover developed. It seamlessly connected the spy world to the relationship drama. “You sometimes wish you had truth serum in a relationship,” Glover says. “It helps tear down walls and get to know the person deeply, which usually takes years.”
Sloane adds, “John and Jane are so withholding throughout the series. We wanted a moment where they could throw everything at the wall, be sweaty, horny, and sad all at once, giving the audience some real answers.”
Jane’s transformation
During the drug-fueled confession, Jane is the most uncomfortable. “She was our James Bond,” says Sloane. “She had the biggest arc, becoming an accidental hero by the end. John had a family, but Jane only had a cat. She experienced love through John.”
Erskine found revealing Jane’s backstory both terrifying and cathartic. “Holding that in for six months was challenging, but the scene was great to do because it scared me. It felt cathartic and terrifying.”

Glover, who directed the episode, emphasized the need for exhaustion in the final fight. “In movies, characters often fight without losing energy, but in reality, you’re exhausted by the end. Jane can barely fight John off, which feels like the ultimate betrayal. He’s making her tell the truth, which she resists but needs for their relationship to progress.”
Glover credits Erskine for her performance. “Directing was challenging, but Maya was so dialed in. She killed that scene.”

The moment also channels the swan painting by Hilma af Klint, placed above the couple’s mantle. “It represents spy vs. spy, the yin and the yang, the woman and the man,” says Sloane. “On the carpet, they become those swans, embracing and kissing.”
Ultimately, it wasn’t the stunning costumes or dreamy ski chalet vacations that made “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” resonate with viewers, but the sweat-covered couple laughing on the floor. “That part on the ground is when we accept each other,” says Glover. “I love when she says, ‘Your nose is weird.’ It’s about feeling accepted, which is what a real relationship is.”
