Alexander Payne’s cinematic journey: From ’Election’ to new horizons
A master storyteller’s evolving vision
Two-time Academy Award winner Alexander Payne recently shared exciting updates about his future projects during his appearance at the Sarajevo Film Festival, where he received a lifetime achievement award. Known for his unique storytelling and keen eye for character-driven narratives, Payne’s discussion ranged from a sequel to his beloved black comedy “Election” to his aspirations of creating a Western and a car chase film.
Revisiting Tracy Flick: A sequel in the works
Fans of the 1999 cult classic Election will be thrilled to hear that Payne is in talks to direct a sequel titled Tracy Flick Can’t Win. This new installment, based on Tom Perrotta’s 2022 follow-up novel, will see Reese Witherspoon reprising her iconic role as the ambitious Tracy Flick. Payne, along with his longtime collaborator Jim Taylor, is currently conceptualizing what this sequel would look like. The project is being developed for the streaming service Paramount+.

Exploring new genres: Westerns and car chases
Payne also revealed his plans to venture into new genres. He is working on a Western with David Hemingson, the writer of his latest film The Holdovers. Drawing inspiration from Anthony Mann’s works like Winchester ’73, Payne aims to bring a realistic and naturalistic approach to the Western genre. He emphasized the importance of landscape in his films, suggesting that the interplay between character and environment will be a significant element in this new project.
In addition to the Western, Payne expressed a strong desire to create a car chase film, inspired by classics like Bullitt and the French film The Burglars. He mentioned the 1971 film Vanishing Point as a masterpiece that fuels his ambition to craft a high-octane car chase movie.
A look back at a storied career
Payne’s illustrious career includes eight feature films that have garnered 24 Oscar nominations. His notable works include Citizen Ruth (1996), About Schmidt (2002), The Descendants (2011), Nebraska (2013), and Downsizing (2017). His films are known for their deep character studies and often explore the complexities of human relationships.
At the Sarajevo Film Festival, Payne introduced a special screening of his 2004 film Sideways, which won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Reflecting on his collaboration with Paul Giamatti, who starred in both Sideways and The Holdovers, Payne expressed his admiration for long-standing director-actor partnerships, citing examples like Bergman-von Sydow and Fellini-Mastroianni.
The art of low-budget filmmaking
One of Payne’s key philosophies is maintaining low budgets for his films. He believes that lower budgets offer greater creative freedom by minimizing interference from financiers. This approach allows him to focus on the artistic aspects of filmmaking without the pressure of commercial expectations.
“I want low budgets. Freedom lies in lower budgets,” Payne stated. He emphasized that keeping costs low helps avoid the influence of those who are primarily concerned with financial returns, allowing him to stay true to his creative vision.
The creative process: Instinct and perseverance
When asked about the secret to his sustained success, Payne described his creative process as one driven by instinct and perseverance. He stressed the importance of dedicating time to writing and developing ideas, likening it to putting in thousands of hours to hone one’s craft.
“You put your butt down and write. You just have to keep doing it,” he said. Payne’s commitment to his work is evident in his meticulous approach to filmmaking, ensuring that each project is a labor of love and creativity.
