A week in Chicago: The Democratic National Convention
This past week, Chicago transformed into a vibrant hub of political activity as politicians, celebrities, and pundits gathered for the Democratic National Convention (DNC). The city buzzed with energy, from the powerful speeches by the Obamas to the touching moments shared by Vice Presidential nominee Tim Walz and his family. The event was a whirlwind of emotions, culminating in Vice President Harris’ heartfelt acceptance speech for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.
Harris’ journey: From courthouse to White House
Vice President Harris’ speech was a poignant reflection on her journey from the courthouse to the White House. She shared childhood memories and emphasized her lifelong commitment to justice and equality. “I believe that everybody has a right to safety, to dignity, and justice,” she declared. Harris passionately advocated for an opportunity economy, ensuring the American Dream remains attainable for all. Her words resonated deeply, but they also prompted reflection on the cost of reaching this moment.
A shifting political landscape
Just two months ago, the political scene was starkly different. President Biden’s lackluster debate performance in late June left many disheartened. I, too, resigned myself to a final summer of self-care before preparing to vote for Biden-Harris in November. The memory of 2016’s unexpected outcome loomed large, reminding me that much was beyond my control.
However, within weeks, everything changed. The news of an assassination attempt on Trump during my birthday dinner left me numb. Shortly after, rumors of Biden withdrawing from the race surfaced, sparking a new kind of fear. The possibility of Harris seeking the nomination in his place became increasingly likely.
Voting memories and political evolution
My first voting experience was in 2008, during my freshman year of college. I proudly mailed my absentee ballot for Obama back to Illinois. That era, before the constant barrage of social media and misinformation, feels like a different lifetime. Obama’s election brought hope, especially to my father, who became an American citizen after nearly 40 years just to vote. It seemed the country was progressing. Then, Trump’s presidency shattered that illusion.
The Trump years were marked by divisive policies, infighting, and relentless attacks. The 2020 election, with its nail-biting delays, finally brought a sense of relief. Biden’s presidency, though imperfect, offered a semblance of normalcy and respite from the chaos of the MAGA era.
Harris’ candidacy and the challenges ahead
When Harris emerged as the nominee, I knew she had the capability to lead. Her impressive track record speaks for itself. However, I am acutely aware of the misogynoir she faces—a toxic blend of racism and sexism directed at women of color. The past month has seen a barrage of derogatory comments about her, from her sorority to the mispronunciation of her name. As the late Nobel laureate Toni Morrison said, “Racism is a distraction,” but it remains exhausting and painful.
Harris did not shy away from addressing Trump directly, calling him an ”unserious man” and condemning his violent rhetoric and role in stripping women of their reproductive rights. “Consider not only the chaos and calamity when he was in office but also the gravity of what has happened since he lost the last election,” she urged.
A hopeful yet cautious outlook
Harris’ speech was a testament to her love for the country and her vision for its future. “I love our country with all my heart. Everywhere I go, everyone I meet, I see a nation ready to move forward, ready for the next step in the incredible journey that is America,” she said. Her words inspire hope, but the path ahead remains uncertain.
Should Harris take office without a Democratic majority in the Senate or a flipped House, the road will be challenging. Yet, I believe in the possibility of progress. However, I cannot forget the complicity of those who elected Trump and unleashed chaos upon us. For that, forgiveness is not an option.
