Leone Film Group: A beacon in the Italian film distribution landscape
Navigating the evolving movie market
In the ever-changing world of cinema, Leone Film Group (LFG) stands tall as Italy’s premier distributor of high-quality English-language indie films. From the visionary works of Martin Scorsese to the blockbuster hits of Steven Spielberg, LFG’s portfolio spans a diverse range of genres and directors.
Shifting strategies in film acquisition
Historically, LFG relied heavily on output deals with major U.S. indie studios like Lionsgate and Spielberg’s Amblin. However, the current strategy is more flexible. “We source our films from any producer with a worthy product,” says Francesco Polimanti, head of acquisitions at LFG. This approach has led to the acquisition of notable titles such as Civil War featuring Kirsten Dunst, John Wick 4 starring Keanu Reeves, and the highly anticipated Dumb Money.
Cannes: A treasure trove of cinematic gems
Polimanti’s recent buying spree at Cannes resulted in the acquisition of three films from Black Bear Entertainment. Among them is Wife and Dog, directed by Guy Ritchie and set in the world of British aristocracy. This marks the fifth Ritchie film to be distributed in Italy by LFG. Other exciting titles include the action-thriller Mutiny with Jason Statham and the provocative thriller I Want Your Sex starring Olivia Wilde.
Upcoming releases: A diverse lineup
LFG’s upcoming slate is a testament to its eclectic taste. Highlights include Sugar Bandits, starring Will Smith and directed by Stefano Sollima, and Sunny Dancer, featuring Bella Ramsey as a teenager in cancer remission. David Mackenzie’s heist thriller Fuze, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Daddio, a two-hander with Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson, are also on the horizon.
A blend of art and action
“We handle all kinds of movies, from Pablo Larrain’s Spencer to John Wick,” says Polimanti. The John Wick series, particularly, has been a significant revenue generator in Italy, with LFG even executive-producing John Wick 2.
Financial health and strategic partnerships
Despite the growth of its production side, distribution remains a crucial part of LFG’s business, accounting for roughly half of the group’s €86.6 million ($94.5 million) revenue in 2023. A successful collaboration with RAI Cinema’s 01 Distribuzione saw the theatrical release of A24’s Civil War in Italy, marking LFG’s first partnership with A24.
A fruitful collaboration with RAI Cinema
For over a decade, LFG and RAI Cinema’s 01 Distribution have co-released numerous titles, creating a seamless partnership. “It feels like we’re a single team,” says Polimanti. RAI Cinema chief Paolo Del Brocco describes their relationship as “profitable and productive.”
Upcoming Italian releases
Among the upcoming Italian releases is Gabriele Muccino’s Here Now, starring Elena Kampouris. The film follows a young Californian named Sophie who, on the last day of her vacation in Sicily, meets a boy and spends a wild night with him. Another anticipated release is Paolo Genovese’s comedy Follemente. Both films are produced by Lotus.
A nod to cinematic heritage
Returning to its roots, LFG will soon re-release the director’s cut of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America in a new 4K version. “Reintroducing this timeless film to the public 40 years after its original release fills me with great pride,” says Andrea Leone, president and CEO of Leone Film Group. “I am confident this re-release will touch the hearts of new generations and rekindle emotions in those who have already loved this film.”
Personal reflections for cinema enthusiasts
For those who cherish the magic of cinema, LFG’s diverse and dynamic lineup offers something for everyone. Whether you’re drawn to the intense action of John Wick 4 or the emotional depth of Sunny Dancer, there’s a film that will resonate with you. The re-release of Once Upon a Time in America is a particularly exciting event, offering a chance to experience a classic in stunning 4K quality.
