Warner Bros. Discovery welcomes new marketing chief: Shauna Spenley
A new chapter for Warner Bros. Discovery
In a significant move, Warner Bros. Discovery has appointed Shauna Spenley as the global chief marketing officer for its direct-to-consumer division. This transition marks a new era for the company as it continues to expand its streaming platforms, including Max and Discovery+.
Transition of leadership
Spenley steps into the role previously held by Patrizio “Pato” Spagnoletto, who will remain with the company through the fall to ensure a smooth transition. Spenley will officially start on September 3, reporting directly to JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery.
A seasoned professional
Spenley brings a wealth of experience from her tenure at Riot Games, where she served as the global president of entertainment. At Riot, she spearheaded the company’s expansion into film, TV, and music, and managed the IP strategy and consumer products teams. Before Riot, Spenley spent 15 years at Netflix in various senior leadership roles, including VP of marketing and publicity.
Responsibilities and vision
At Warner Bros. Discovery, Spenley will oversee the global marketing organization responsible for driving subscription growth for the company’s streaming platforms. Her role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities, including branding, content marketing, subscriber growth, retention and engagement, marketing science, research, and media. She will collaborate closely with other divisions, particularly U.S. networks and international teams.
A fan turned leader
In a statement provided by Warner Bros. Discovery, Spenley expressed her enthusiasm for the new role: “I have been a subscriber and fan of Max since its launch. The incredible array of content is unmatched in the industry, including the most prestigious brand in television… HBO. I cannot wait to jump in and get to work with JB, Casey [Bloys, chairman and CEO, HBO and Max content] and the marketing group.”
Spagnoletto’s legacy
Spagnoletto, who previously served as EVP and head of marketing for Hulu, joined Discovery Inc. in early 2021 as the global CMO for the direct-to-consumer business. Following Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia, he became the CMO of Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming group. Reflecting on his tenure, Spagnoletto said, “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity WBD has given me and proud of the momentum we built around Max. Though this is only the beginning chapter for Max, it is a good transition moment and I have full faith that Shauna and the incredible team here will succeed in making Max a top entertainment destination around the world.”
Perrette’s endorsement
Perrette, in announcing Spenley’s hire, praised her talent and the potential she brings to the team: “We are so fortunate to be able to bring in a talent of Shauna’s caliber and it says a lot about our achievements, our assets and team, and opportunity ahead of us that she can’t wait to join our One WBD Team.” He also acknowledged Spagnoletto’s significant contributions to the company.
The future of streaming at Warner Bros. Discovery
With Spenley at the helm of the global marketing organization, Warner Bros. Discovery is poised to continue its growth and innovation in the streaming industry. Her extensive experience and passion for the content will undoubtedly drive the company forward, ensuring that platforms like Max and Discovery+ remain top choices for entertainment enthusiasts worldwide.
