A fresh take on ‘The Aerobics Project’: Season 2 dives deeper into 1980s France
A nostalgic journey through 1980s France
Adding to its expanding scripted TV offerings, France TV Distribution has launched sales for Season 2 of the OCS Signature drama-comedy The Aerobics Project (Toutouyoutou). This light-hearted dramedy, set in 1982 France, captures the nation’s fascination with American pop culture, particularly the aerobics craze.
The story so far
Created by the talented writing team of Maxime Donzel, Géraldine de Margerie, and David Coujard, the first season introduced us to Karine (Claire Dumas), a dowdy fortysomething housewife living in Blagnac, a mundane suburb of Toulouse. Blagnac is notable mainly for being the birthplace of French aeronautics. Karine’s life takes an unexpected turn when she stumbles upon an aerobics class led by the charismatic Jane (Alexia Barlier), a recent arrival from the U.S. Jane’s interest in Project 37, a top-secret program run by Karine’s husband at the local aeronautics company, adds an intriguing layer to the story.
Season 2: New challenges and alliances
By the time Season 2 rolls around, Karine has uncovered Jane’s true identity as an industrial spy. Now employed at the same aeronautics company, Karine is forced to collaborate with Jane. Their mission becomes even more complex with the arrival of Tom, Jane’s liaison officer, who steps in to assist.
Despite the espionage and corporate intrigue, Karine finds empowerment and body confidence through aerobics, thanks to Jane’s influence. This season promises to be as off-beat and upbeat as the first, blending humor with the thrills of a spy thriller.
A musical triumph
Season 1 premiered in March 2022 at France’s Series Mania, where it won the Best Original Music award for its score composed by French pop group Feu! Chatterton. Season 2, now a Canal+ OCS Signature show, was released in France on August 27. The series is produced by Agat Films-Ex Nihilo, the same company behind Michel Hazanavicius’ Cannes Competition entry, The Most Precious of Cargoes.
Behind the scenes
“We wanted to create a show about aerobics,” Donzel shared during a SeriesFest Q&A last year. “We were inspired by Jane Fonda’s autobiography and the incredible moment when women suddenly had the opportunity to sweat and exercise.”
Donzel added, “We aimed to make something fun—a spy thriller that also explores female friendship, sorority, and the French fascination with America.”
Season 2 is directed by Julien Patry (Un entretien), who skillfully highlights the cheesier and campier aspects of the era, especially through hairstyles and makeup.
