Unveiling the truth: Documentaries that delve into global crises and scandals
As the Unifrance Rendez-Vous TV market in Le Havre approaches, documentary enthusiasts are in for a treat. Java Films is set to present a lineup that promises to be both compelling and timely, touching on some of the most pressing issues of our time. From the political turmoil in Israel to the gang violence in Haiti, these documentaries offer a deep dive into the complexities of our world.
Israel: Ministers of chaos
Set against the backdrop of Israel’s destruction of Gaza following Hamas’ October 7 attack, Israel: Ministers of Chaos focuses on the most right-wing government in Israel’s history. The film zeroes in on two key figures: national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and finance minister Bezalel Smotrich. Directed by Jérôme Sesquin and Nitzan Perelman and produced by Yuzu Productions, this documentary examines the roles these men have played in deepening the internal divisions within Israeli society and steering the country towards its most significant existential threat since its establishment in 1948.
Commissioned by Arte, Java Films has already pre-sold the documentary to Spain’s TV3 and anticipates more sales in the coming weeks. The film delves into the ideologies of Kahanism and religious Zionism, which Ben-Gvir and Smotrich champion. Their agenda includes imposing Jewish supremacist legislation and re-founding biblical Israel through the annexation of Gaza, the West Bank, and beyond.
“We’re proud to continue our longstanding collaboration with Yuzu after the release of ‘Tax Wars’ and ‘The Click Trap’ earlier this year,” said Kathryn Bonnici, Java’s head of acquisitions and development.
Haiti: The iron grip of the gangs
Another gripping documentary in Java’s lineup is Haiti: The Iron Grip of the Gangs, directed by Catherine Norris Trent and Roméo Langlois for France24. In Port-au-Prince, armed groups now control more than 80% of the city, where nearly 3 million people live under the constant threat of gang violence. The filmmakers shot the documentary under truly exceptional circumstances, capturing the harrowing experiences of residents held hostage by the ongoing crisis.
The film also features an interview with Jimmy Chérizier, the notorious spokesman of a powerful gang alliance known as Viv Ansamn. Instead of fighting each other, these armed groups have united against the state, forcing Prime Minister Ariel Henry to resign during an overseas trip in March.
This is Java’s second title from France24, following last year’s acquisition of “Your Face is Ours: The Dangers of Facial Recognition.”
International adoptions: A global scandal
Java Films has also scored several pre-sales for International Adoptions: A Global Scandal from Tangerine Productions and filmmakers Sonia Gonzalez and Christine Tournadre. This documentary explores the plight of over a million “orphans” adopted by Western families over the past 60 years, many of whom have since discovered that their pasts were fabricated.
The film follows investigative journalists, activists, and researchers across South Korea, Sweden, France, Chile, Germany, Holland, and Switzerland as they uncover the dark underbelly of the international adoption market. “Even today, women are still being manipulated, threatened, or tricked into giving up babies – often with the blessing of government authorities,” Java noted.
Pre-sales for this documentary have already been secured with Switzerland’s RTS, RTBF and DPG Media in Belgium, and Poland’s TVP.
Personal reflections for enthusiasts
