Tim Burton’s legacy: A superhero revolution
A star on the Walk of Fame
In a heartfelt ceremony, Michael Keaton honored his longtime collaborator, Tim Burton, with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Keaton, who famously donned the cape and cowl in Burton’s 1989 film Batman, reflected on the monumental impact Burton has had on the superhero genre.
The birth of a new era
Keaton reminisced about the moment Burton handed him the script for Batman. “This was after Beetlejuice. After that performance, after that type of movie, he says to the studio, ‘I want that guy.’ The uproar was unbelievable. The press went crazy. But he stood by me. The guts it took to stand by that decision will always be appreciated by me,” Keaton shared.
Burton’s vision for Batman was revolutionary. It wasn’t just another superhero movie; it was a dark, gothic reimagining that set the tone for future films in the genre. Keaton emphasized, “What that movie spawned… there are a lot of people making a lot of money out there with their superhero movies because of his choice and his vision of what those movies could be, because he changed everything.”
The backlash and the bold move
When Keaton was first cast as Batman, the backlash was intense. Comic book fans sent around 50,000 letters to Warner Bros. complaining about the selection. Keaton recalled, “The fact that Tim said ‘That guy, I want that guy’… The fact that people cared one way or another so much is still baffling. But that was a ballsy move on his part.”
In a more recent interview, Keaton praised Burton for his groundbreaking work. “I can’t necessarily say this, but there’s a strong possibility there is no Marvel Universe, there is no DC Universe, without Tim Burton. He was doubted and questioned,” Keaton noted.
A dynamic duo returns
Keaton and Burton are set to reunite for the upcoming sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, hitting theaters on September 6. Their collaboration has spanned decades, including the 2019 live-action Dumbo. However, Keaton candidly admitted, “I think I let him down on one movie, but that’s just me, and it bugs me to this day. I was clueless on Dumbo. I sucked in Dumbo.”
Reflecting on a legacy
Burton’s influence on Hollywood is undeniable. His unique vision and willingness to take risks have paved the way for countless filmmakers and actors. For cinema enthusiasts, Burton’s work is a testament to the power of creativity and the importance of staying true to one’s artistic vision.
Keaton’s tribute to Burton at the Walk of Fame ceremony was not just a celebration of a star on the sidewalk but a recognition of a legacy that has shaped the landscape of modern cinema. As fans eagerly await the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, it’s clear that the dynamic duo of Keaton and Burton still has plenty of magic left to share with the world.
