Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves: A timeless bond forged on set
A unique connection spanning decades
In a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Winona Ryder shared a delightful tidbit about her enduring friendship with Keanu Reeves. The two actors, who starred together in the 1992 gothic horror film Dracula, have maintained a special bond that transcends the screen. Over three decades later, they still refer to each other as “husband” and “wife” in their text messages, a playful nod to their possibly real wedding on set.
The ’Dracula’ wedding: Fact or fiction?
Ryder and Reeves portrayed Jonathan and Mina Harker in Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. During the 2018 press tour for their romantic-comedy Destination Wedding, they revealed an intriguing detail: real priests were used during the filming of their wedding scene. This revelation led Ryder to believe that they might actually be married. “I swear to god I think we’re married in real life,” she said. “In that scene, Francis used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So, I think we’re married.”
Reeves, initially unsure about the authenticity of the ceremony, later conceded, “We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests. Winona says we are, Coppola says we are, so I guess we’re married under the eyes of God.”
A bond beyond the screen
Ryder’s affection for Reeves is evident. “I would literally do anything with him. Like he is so special,” she gushed. However, she humorously admitted that a John Wick movie might not be in her future due to the intense stunts involved. ”I’m just thinking of my bones,” she quipped.
Their unique bond is also reflected in their text messages. Ryder shared, “We always say who it is, even though it says it on the text. So like on his birthday I go: ‘Happy birthday, my husband.’ And then he’s like, ‘Hey, my wife, I love you. KR 57.’ Like on each birthday he’s like KR 57 or whatever his age is. He’s always done that.”
Collaborations through the years
Beyond Dracula and Destination Wedding, Ryder and Reeves have shared the screen in Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly. Their collaborations have always been marked by a palpable chemistry and mutual respect.
Reflections on past co-stars
During her podcast interview, Ryder also reminisced about another influential co-star: Daniel Day-Lewis. The two starred in Martin Scorsese’s 1993 drama The Age of Innocence, which earned Ryder an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Reflecting on their time together, Ryder recalled, “When I was doing the press junket for Age of Innocence, Daniel Day-Lewis gave me the best advice because we were both like going through stuff at the time. He’s like, just keep talking so they can’t ask you [questions]…just ramble. I was like, ‘Oh!’ That was sort of funny but I am like a natural… if I connect with someone you just get to talking.”
A lasting legacy
The enduring friendship between Ryder and Reeves is a testament to the deep connections that can be forged on set. Their playful banter and mutual admiration continue to delight fans, offering a heartwarming glimpse into the lives of two beloved actors.
