Exploring the human-tech bond in ‘Mothernet’: A new cinematic journey
A glimpse into the future
Production is underway for the highly anticipated drama film, “Mothernet”, directed by the acclaimed Ho Wi Ding. Known for his award-winning works like “Pinoy Sunday” and “Cities of Last Things,” Ho Wi Ding is set to bring another compelling story to life. This time, the narrative delves into the intricate relationship between humans and technology, set against the backdrop of Indonesia’s near future.
The heart of the story
“Mothernet” centers around 16-year-old Rama, who faces the emotional turmoil of his mother’s coma following a tragic accident. With the aid of an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) program, Rama and his father embark on a poignant journey of reconnection and healing. This family drama promises to explore deep emotional landscapes, highlighting the human experience in an increasingly digital world.
Stellar cast and crew
The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Dian Sastrowardoyo from the Netflix series “Cigarette Girl” and Ringgo Agus Rahman known for “Falling in Love Like in Movies.” Rising star Ali Fikri, recognized for his role in “24 Hours with Gaspar,” takes on the role of Rama, bringing youthful energy and depth to the character.
A blend of real and virtual worlds
“Mothernet” is being filmed primarily on location in Indonesia, with its virtual scenes shot in Singapore at the X3D Studio virtual production facilities operated by Refinery Media. These facilities are among the largest of their kind in Southeast Asia, promising a visually stunning cinematic experience. The production is expected to continue through the third quarter, with the completed film slated for delivery in 2025.
Collaborative efforts
The film is a product of BASE Entertainment, the studio behind the critically acclaimed “Impetigore” and the period series “Cigarette Girl.” BASE Entertainment is collaborating with Beacon Film, founded by actor Dian Sastrowardoyo, and Singapore-based Refinery Media. The project is also produced by the renowned Vietnam-based producer Winnie Lau through her new production banner, JEM Productions. Lau is celebrated for her work on the 2022 Netflix drama series “Thai Cave Rescue” and the Joko Widodo-directed film “Impetigore.”
A message of love and connection

A director’s vision
Director Ho Wi Ding shares his passion for the script, describing it as an exceptional cautionary tale about humanity’s attachment to technology. He highlights the film’s exploration of family dynamics and the different ways people grieve, stressing that there is no right or wrong way to cope with loss—only the danger of being stuck in the past.
A new era in Southeast Asian filmmaking
Karen Seah, founder of Refinery Media and X3D Studio, views “Mothernet” as a representation of a new era in Southeast Asian filmmaking. By combining their strengths, the team is committed to producing a film that sets new industry benchmarks.
