With Birnbaum’s extensive experience and industry knowledge, she is seen as the ideal successor to build upon this legacy as Gold Derby approaches its 25th year.
Birnbaum’s journey to Gold Derby
Birnbaum will officially take over Gold Derby on September 16, just after the Primetime Emmys. Her responsibilities will encompass overseeing the platform’s coverage of major awards such as the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, and Golden Globes, among others. Reporting to Tom Finn, PMC’s executive VP and general manager of operations, Birnbaum will continue to be based in Los Angeles.
Reflecting on her new role, Birnbaum shared, “It’s truly an honor to be handed the reins of Gold Derby. I know firsthand how much respect and support the entertainment industry has for the site, and I’m eager to expand its profile as the pre-eminent home for awards predictions.”
A powerhouse at Amazon MGM Studios
Before joining Gold Derby, Birnbaum played a pivotal role at Amazon MGM Studios, transforming it into an awards powerhouse. Under her leadership, the studio secured 62 Emmy nominations, including significant nods for Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Fallout.” Her tenure also saw 12 Academy Award nominations in 2021, 68 Emmy Award nominations in 2023, and 16 Golden Globe Award nominations in 2023.
Birnbaum expressed her gratitude to Jennifer Salke and Sue Kroll for their support during her time at Amazon MGM Studios. “I am so proud of what we accomplished, including our recent Emmy nominations for Fallout, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Red, White & Royal Blue, and more,” she said.

Sue Kroll, head of marketing at Amazon MGM Studios, announced that Brooke Ford will serve as interim head of awards following Birnbaum’s departure. Kroll praised Birnbaum and the entire awards team for their incredible work, including their recent groundbreaking Emmy nominations and Creative Arts Emmy wins. “We will continue to work with Deb as she steps into her new role at Gold Derby,” Kroll assured.
A distinguished career
Birnbaum’s career spans various prestigious roles, including executive editor, TV, for a major entertainment publication, and president and editor-in-chief of TV Guide Magazine. Her work has earned recognition from the L.A. Press Club, the Publicists Guild of America, the Webby Awards, the Clio Awards, Promax, and the Television Academy, where she received an Emmy Award for producing the “Actors on Actors” series.
In addition to her professional achievements, Birnbaum is actively involved in philanthropic efforts. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA) and is a member of the President’s Council of Cornell Women. She is also an alumni ambassador for Cornell University and a member of several prestigious industry organizations, including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the Television Academy, and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
