Middleburg Film Festival: A celebration of cinematic excellence
The Middleburg Film Festival, now in its 12th year, is set to dazzle audiences this October with a lineup that promises to be both thought-provoking and entertaining. This year, the festival opens with the Apple Original film Blitz, starring the talented Saoirse Ronan. Directed by the visionary Steve McQueen, who will be honored with the festival’s Visionary Director award, this film is a must-watch.
A journey through wartime England
Set against the backdrop of World War II, Blitz tells the poignant story of George, a 9-year-old boy played by Elliott Heffernan. His mother, Rita (Ronan), sends him to the English countryside for safety. However, George’s determination to reunite with his family in East London leads him on a perilous adventure. The film captures the essence of a mother’s love and a child’s bravery, making it a compelling watch for all ages.
Spotlight on ‘Emilia Perez’
The festival’s Friday Spotlight film is Emilia Perez, directed by Jacques Audiard. This Spanish-language film stars Karla Sofía Gascón as a formidable drug lord who embraces her true identity as a woman. The film received one of the longest standing ovations at Cannes and won the Jury Prize, along with the best actress prize for its ensemble cast, including Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz. Following its Cannes premiere, Netflix acquired the film for the U.S. and U.K. markets. Zoe Saldaña will be honored with the Festival’s Spotlight Actor Award for her transformative role.
The intrigue of ‘Conclave’
Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, is set as the Saturday night centerpiece screening. The film delves into the secretive process of selecting a new Pope after the unexpected death of the beloved pontiff. Ralph Fiennes stars as Cardinal Lawrence, who uncovers deep secrets that could shake the very foundations of the church. The ensemble cast includes Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Lucian Msamati, and Isabella Rossellini. Rossellini will join Berger at the festival to receive the Agnès Varda Trailblazing Film Artist award.
Celebrating film diplomacy
Blitz will be co-presented with the British Embassy, with British Ambassador to the United States Karen Pierce introducing the film. Pierce will receive the festival’s inaugural Film Diplomacy award, recognizing her commitment to the film industry and the power of cinema to foster global understanding and creativity. Acting Under-Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Lee Satterfield will present the award.
A global perspective
In collaboration with the U.S. Department of State through the American Film Showcase, the Middleburg Film Festival will host a delegation of leading Kenyan and Nigerian filmmakers. Notable names include Kunle Afolayan and Bolanle Austen Peters from Nigeria, and Kenneth Ambani and Philip Karanja from Kenya. These filmmakers will share their work and engage in discussions about connecting with global audiences and the significant role of film in the creative economy.
