Sk8 or Die: The Lee Ralph Story – A Skateboarding Legend’s Journey
A new series on the horizon
Oscar-winning duo Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe, known for their work on ”Two Distant Strangers” and HBO’s “BS High,” are set to direct and executive produce a new anthology series titled “Sk8 or Die: The Lee Ralph Story.” This series delves into the extraordinary life of Lee Ralph, a former professional skateboarder who has become a folk hero and recluse.
Star-studded cast
The series will feature Vinnie Bennett (“Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga,” “Whina,” “Human Traces”) as Lee Ralph and Keisha Castle-Hughes (“FBI: Most Wanted,” “Whale Rider,” ”Game of Thrones”) as his sister and partner in crime, Kim Ralph. Their performances are expected to bring depth and authenticity to the characters, making the series a must-watch for fans of both actors.
Behind the scenes
The six-part show is a brainchild of New Zealand-based production company Tavake, known for their work on “Madam.” Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk and “Jackass” star Steve-O are on board as executive producers, adding their unique perspectives and expertise to the project. Free and Roe will also serve as executive producers under their banner, The Unreasnble.
The creative team
Tavake principals Tom Hern (“The Dark Horse,” “Shadow in the Cloud,” “The Panthers”) and Halaifonua (Nua) Finau (“The Panthers,” “Red White and Brass”) co-wrote the series and will act as showrunners. Hern will also direct some episodes, ensuring a cohesive vision throughout the series. Julian Arahanga will serve as a producer for Tavake, adding his experience and insight to the production.
A unique narrative structure
The first season, consisting of six episodes, is currently in advanced development. Each season will focus on a different character within the skateboarding culture, providing a fresh perspective and new stories with each installment. The inaugural season will explore Ralph’s colorful childhood in New Zealand, his rise to fame as a Vision skate pro in the late 1980s, and his mysterious disappearance from the sport at the peak of his career.
A deeper look into Lee Ralph’s life
The series has been commissioned by Sky New Zealand Originals and is currently seeking international co-production and financing partners to bring the project to life. Hern, who has known Lee Ralph for nearly 20 years, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “Lee’s story is filled with incredible twists and turns, much like ‘Forrest Gump.’ It’s touching, inspiring, and offers a lot to learn and reflect on.”
Themes of love and redemption
The Unreasnble duo emphasized the deep themes of love and redemption present in Ralph’s story. They believe that the high-energy narrative will captivate audiences and provide a unique viewing experience. The series promises to be a rollercoaster of emotions, blending the excitement of skateboarding with the heartfelt moments of Ralph’s life.
Tavake’s recent success
Tavake’s 10-part sex work comedy-drama, “Madam,” starring Rachel Griffiths and Martin Henderson, recently won ‘best creation’ at The Golden Nymph Awards at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival. The series is being distributed globally by Fifth Season, showcasing Tavake’s ability to create compelling and award-winning content.
Steve-O’s new tour
In addition to his work on “Sk8 or Die,” Steve-O has completed a sold-out tour titled “The Bucket List” and is set to embark on another tour, “The Super Dummy Tour,” starting on October 4. His involvement in the series adds an extra layer of excitement and anticipation for fans.
