Pink Parrot Media secures global rights to “Black Butterflies”
A new animated feature with a powerful message
Pink Parrot Media has recently acquired the global distribution rights for David Baute’s animated feature, “Black Butterflies,” following its successful run at summer festivals, including a world premiere at the Annecy Contrechamp competition.
Strategic partnerships and upcoming releases
Pink Parrot Media is actively engaging with distributors worldwide and has already secured a deal with Sideral Cinema in Spain, known for distributing the Spanish Oscars submission “Saturn Returns.” The film is set to hit Spanish theaters on December 5, following its domestic premiere on October 4 at the Sitges Film Festival. Baute will be present at the Catalan screening alongside key team members, including screenwriter Yaiza Berrocal, composer Diego Navarro, production designer and animation director Pepe Sánchez, and director of photography and art María Pulido.
Festival circuit and international acclaim
“Black Butterflies” is scheduled to appear at several prestigious festivals, including Animasyros, DocsMx, and the Manchester Animation Festival. This 2D-animated documentary delves into the pressing issue of climate change, drawing inspiration from Baute’s 2020 live-action film “Climate Exodus.” The narrative weaves together personal stories of women climate refugees from Kenya, India, and the Caribbean, creating a poignant and intimate portrayal of their experiences.
Creative collaboration and artistic vision
Baute and Berrocal collaborated with art director María Pulido and production designer and animation director José Sanchez Alonso to bring these narratives to life. The film also features an original song by Grammy-winning Panamanian artist Ruben Blades, adding a layer of commercial appeal and recognition.
Production and financial backing
“Black Butterflies” is produced by Spain’s Ikiru Films and Tinglado Film, with contributions from Catalan companies Anangu Group and CCMA, as well as Panama’s Tunche Films. The project received financial support from various entities, including Spanish pubcaster RTVE, state TV operator 3Cat in Catalonia, Public Television of the Canary Islands, and Mogambo. Additional funding came from Spain’s Ministry of Culture-ICAA, ICEC-Department of Culture-Generalitat de Catalunya, and the government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council of Tenerife.
Industry reflections and future prospects
Edmon Roch, producer at Ikiru Films, expressed his enthusiasm: “It’s a luxury to start our journey with a sales agent like Pink Parrot Media, whose experience, detail, and passion were evident from our presentation at Annecy. We’re equally excited to have Sideral Cinema, a company that meticulously handles all its releases, as our distributor in Spain.”
Tania Pinto Da Cunha, VP and partner at Pink Parrot Media, added: “‘Black Butterflies’ is a striking and moving story that raises social awareness of climate change. What attracted us to this story is its poignant reminder of the human cost of global warming and the importance of solidarity in an ever-changing world. At PPM, we seek stories with a message, and this film offers much more. The visuals are stunning, the narrative is powerful, and the animation style is strikingly beautiful.”
Roberto Butragueño, CEO of Sideral Cinema, concluded: “We are proud to share this unique film of extraordinary quality with the Spanish public. It addresses important and current issues, and we are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Ikiru after the successful experience with ‘Saturn Returns.’”
