Atresmedia Cine unveils new projects at San Sebastian
David Trueba’s new film adaptation
In a star-studded presentation at the San Sebastian Film Festival, Atresmedia Cine announced their upcoming film, “Siempre es Invierno,” directed by the acclaimed David Trueba. This film is an adaptation of Trueba’s own novel, “Blitz,” which delves into an unexpected love affair between a man in his thirties and a woman in her sixties.
A continuation of a successful partnership
Following the success of Trueba’s previous comedy, “Jokes and Cigarettes,” Atresmedia Cine, the film division of one of Spain’s leading commercial broadcast networks, was eager to collaborate with Trueba once again. Jaime Ortiz de Artiñano, managing director at Atresmedia Cine, shared insights from their meeting with Trueba and producer Edmon Roch. “We knew we wanted to continue supporting his films. We asked David, ‘What do you want to do next?'”
Trueba’s personal journey
Trueba revealed that adapting “Blitz” was a decision he had long resisted. “I had refused to make movies out of my novels or let others do it,” he admitted. “But I’ve reached a point in my life where I’m betraying many things I held onto, so it felt necessary to betray this too.”
The director emphasized the relevance of the film’s themes, particularly the societal taboos surrounding relationships between older women and younger men. “We live in a completely sexist world. There’s no issue when an older man is with a much younger woman, but when the roles are reversed, it still shocks people,” Trueba remarked.
Production and distribution
Atresmedia Cine is collaborating with Ikiru Films, Siempre es Invierno AIE, La Terraza Films, and Wrong Men for the production of “Siempre es Invierno.” BTeam Pictures will handle the film’s distribution.
Trueba’s illustrious career
David Trueba first gained international recognition with his debut film, “The Good Life,” which was selected for Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 1996. He has since built a remarkable career with films like “Soldiers of Salamina” and “Living Is Easy with Eyes Closed,” the latter winning six Goya Awards, including Best Picture.
Upcoming Spanish films showcased
The event also featured presentations from top Spanish directors showcasing their upcoming theatrical releases. Arantxa Echevarría introduced “Infiltrada,” starring Luis Tosar, while Jon Garano presented a trailer for “Marco.” Martin Cuevo unveiled his comedy “¿Quién es Quién?” and was joined on stage by star Elena Irureta, who is in San Sebastian to receive this year’s Zinemira Award.
“Karateka” announced with star-studded cast
The event concluded with the announcement of “Karateka,” the third feature from Señor y Señora co-founder Aritz Moreno. The film will star Andrea Ros (“Zorros”) and Patrick Criado (“Nights In Tefia”), alongside Olympic Gold medallist Sandra Sánchez and her husband-coach Jesús del Moral.
Sánchez shared her excitement about the project, “I started doing karate at the age of six because there was a summer cinema near my house where they showed kung fu movies. To be here now, knowing they’re going to make a movie about my life… It’s surreal!”
Production details
In addition to Atresmedia Cine and Señor y Señora, Apaches Entertainment and Belgium’s Wrong Men will co-produce “Karateka.” The project has secured financial support from the Spanish ICAA film agency, Basque tax incentives, and Belgium’s tax shelter scheme.
