Looking for a new show to binge and having trouble cutting through the noise? If you trust industry voters, the Emmy nominations can be a good place to start. Leading the charge this year is FX’s “Shogun,” which scored a stunning 25 nominations (including limited series) and scored first-time acting nominations for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. FX landed 93 noms all together — helped also by the record-breaking 23 nominations (the most in Emmy history) for its comedy series “The Bear.” If you’re looking for more of a laugh, Max’s “Hacks” and “Curb Your Enthusiam” also received nods, in addition to ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” which earned Selena Gomez her first Emmy nomination this week. If it hasn’t always succeeded, “The Crown” at least concludes as the truest version of itself.” ‘Fallout’ Image Credit: JoJo Whilden/Prime Video Where to Stream: Prime Video Emmy Nominations (16): Drama Series; Lead Actor (Walter Goggins); Production Design; Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes; Picture Editing; Emerging Media Program; Main Title Design; Period or Sci-Fi/Fantasy Makeup; Prosthetic Makeup; Music Supervision; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Special Visual Effects; Stunt Coordination; Writing Variety Review: “Bizarre but intensely fun, ‘Fallout’ is like nothing you’ve ever seen; for that reason alone, you won’t be able to turn away.” ‘The Gilded Age’ Image Credit: Courtesy of HBO Where to Stream: Max Emmy Nominations (5): Drama Series; Lead Actress (Carrie Coon); Supporting Actress (Christine Baranski); Production Design; Period Costumes Variety Review: “Just because ‘The Gilded Age’ knows it has to broaden its horizons doesn’t mean it pursues all its elements with the same passion or aptitude. It’s clear which story points come from enthusiasm and which from obligation; while “Downton Abbey” was more evenly split between upstairs and down, “The Gilded Age” has never paid as much attention to the help as those hiring them.” ‘The Morning Show’ Image Credit: Apple TV+ Where to Stream: Apple TV+ Emmy Nominations (16): Drama Series; Lead Actress (Jennifer Aniston); Lead Actress (Reese Witherspoon); Supporting Actress (Nicole Beharie); Supporting Actress (Greta Lee); Supporting Actress (Karen Pittman); Supporting Actress (Holland Taylor); Supporting Actor (Billy Crudup); Supporting Actor (Mark Duplass); Supporting Actor (Jon Hamm); Guest Actress (Marcia Gay Harden); Production Design; Casting; Directing; Contemporary Hairstyling Variety Review: “Before long, ‘The Morning Show’; is back to its old tricks, building to a conclusion that’s short on coherence, long on overacted theatrics, and despite it all, a total delight to watch. Technically, “The Morning Show” remains as flawed as ever.” ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Image Credit: Courtesy of Prime Video Where to Stream: Prime Video Emmy Nominations (2): Drama Series; Lead Actress (Maya Erskine) Variety Review: “With a few extra hours of runtime, ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ builds John, Jane and their relationship into something worth caring about. This version may not make as many headlines as its predecessor, but it stands up far better to scrutiny.” ‘Shōgun’ Image Credit: Courtesy of Katie Yu/FX Where to Stream: Hulu Emmy Nominations (25): Drama Series; Lead Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada); Lead Actress (Anna Sawai); Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano); Supporting Actor (Takehiro Hira); Guest Actor (Néstor Carbonell); Production Design; Casting; Cinematography; Period Costumes; Directing; Picture Editing; Main Title Design; Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup; Prosthetic Makeup; Music Composition; Main Title Theme Music; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Special Visual Effects; Writing Variety Review: “There are superficial similarities to ‘Game of Thrones’ — five contenders for an empty throne, a storyline about two girlhood friends on opposite sides of a power struggle. But it’s this focus on people that truly unites the two series, and qualifies “Shōgun” to take up the mantle of thrillingly transportive event TV.” ‘Slow Horses’ Image Credit: Courtesy of Apple TV Where to Stream: Apple TV+ Emmy Nominations (8): Lead Actor (Gary Oldman); Supporting Actor (Jack Lowden); Guest Actor (Jonathan Pryce); Casting; Directing; Picture Editing; Music Composition; Writing Variety Review: “You can see that show’s influence in ‘Slow Horses’ moments of black comedy, but this show has a soul that ‘Veep’ never had. We glimpse actual humanity in some of Lamb’s more benevolent antics.” ‘3 Body Problem’ Where to Stream: Netflix Emmy Nominations (6): Drama Series; Cinematography; Picture Editing; Main Title Design; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing Variety Review: “‘3 Body Problem’ is ultimately about an asymmetrical war that pits humankind against adversaries we can neither see nor understand. All the more important, then, to make one side of the exchange indelible enough to carry a show on their own.” ‘Abbott Elementary’ Image Credit: Disney Where to Stream: Hulu Emmy Nominations: Comedy Series; Lead Actress (Quinta Brunson); Supporting Actress (Janelle James); Supporting Actress (Sheryl Lee Ralph); Supporting Actor (Tyler James Williams); Casting; Directing; Contemporary Hairstyling; Sound Mixing; Writing Variety Review: “While the humor in the series remains heartfelt, viewers might start to see why a maturing and less wide-eyed Janine may eventually find it too emotionally exhausting to continue on in the classroom. For decades, teachers have been begging to be seen, and Season 3 of ‘Abbott Elementary’ has tasked itself with truly pulling back the veil.” ‘The Bear’ Image Credit: FX Where to Stream: Hulu Emmy Nominations (23): Comedy Series; Lead Actor (Jeremy Allen White); Supporting Actress (Ayo Edebiri); Supporting Actress (Liza Colón-Zayas); Supporting Actor (Lionel Boyce); Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach); Guest Actor (Jon Bernthal); Guest Actor (Bob Odenkirk); Guest Actor (Will Poulter); Guest Actress (Olivia Coleman); Guest Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis); Production Design; Casting; Cinematography; Contemporary Costumes; Directing; Picture Editing; Contemporary Hairstyling; Contemporary Makeup; Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Writing Variety Review: “‘The Bear’ takes a step down in an aimless Season 3 that relies too heavily on star power.” ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Image Credit: John Johnson/HBO Where to Stream: Max Emmy Nominations (4): Comedy Series; Lead Actor (Larry David); Casting; Sound Mixing Variety Review: “The show’s on-the-fly nature — with its wholly improvised conversations built around the loose outline of a plot — effectively invented a category of entertainment, but also means that the show is by its nature a blunt instrument. Larry and his friends are loopily, outrageously funny; they live out loud; they play games of one-upsmanship that are genuinely delightful to watch. But they are rarely sly.” More from Variety
