Paramount+ has renewed the crime drama from co-creators Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon for a fourth season. The series, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions for Paramount+, ranked as the No. 1 series on the platform during its season three run. Kingstown follows the powerful family in a fictional Michigan town: Kingstown, Michigan, a city whose main industry is nine penitentiaries. Renner stars as Mike McLusky, the town’s unofficial “mayor” and fixer. The third season marked Renner’s remarkable return following his near-fatal accident with a snowplow on 2023 New Year’s Day. “What that guy has done behind the camera and in front of the camera is nothing short of spectacular in every regard,” co-creator Dillon, who also stars in the show as Detective Ian Ferguson, told The Hollywood Reporter when speaking about Renner after the season three finale, and sharing his hopes for a fourth season. “A big driving force [of doing this show] is to see the satisfaction with Jeremy Renner. He made a giant come back and to see him be artistically satisfied. The scripts are great, the characters great. And that’s what we want to do. We don’t want to leave any stone unturned.” The third season saw a series of explosions rocking Kingstown and its citizens, as a new face of the Russian mob set up shop in the city and a drug war raged inside and outside prison walls. The pressure was on McLusky (Renner) to end the war, but things got complicated when a familiar face from his incarcerated past threatened to undermine the Mayor’s attempts to keep the peace among all factions. The season ended by wrapping up most of that storyline, which included the accidental death of a main character. “It actually follows any pattern of authentic criminality, because what that [ending] does, what it always does, is leaves a vacuum. And it will be filled, it’s human nature,” explained Dillon of the cyclical nature of the prison drama. Mayor of Kingstown is among Yellowstone mastermind Sheridan’s growing series slate on Paramount+, which also includes the currently streaming Landman; Lioness, which recently released its season two finale; Yellowstone prequel 1923, which returns Feb. 23; along with Tulsa King, Yellowstone‘s limited prequel series 1883, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves. Yellowstone just aired its season 5B finale, which may have shut the barn door on that flagship series (though spinoffs are in the works). Mayor of Kingstown is executive produced by Sheridan, Dillon and Renner, along with Antoine Fuqua, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Michael Friedman, Dave Erickson, Christoph Schrewe, Wendy Riss Gatsiounis, Evan Perazzo and Keith Cox. Erickson also serves as showrunner and writer for the series. THR Newsletters Sign up for THR news straight to your inbox every day Subscribe Sign Up
