Films directed by women\u2064 dominate the Venice Film Festival\u2019s independently run Giornate Degli Autori, which has unveiled a lineup full of first works and special \u200bevents including \u201cPeaches Goes Bananas,\u201d French filmmaker Marie Losier\u2019s tribute to iconic Canadian electropop provocateur \u200cPeaches.<\/p>\n
Shot over the course of 17 years, \u201cPeaches Goes Bananas\u201d provides an intimate portrait of\u200c the former schoolteacher, who during the 1980s moved from Canada to Berlin and became\u200d a queer feminist icon, breaking taboos and \u201ctransforming her body into\u2064 art,\u201d as the doc\u2019s synopsis puts it. Watch the \u200dtrailer<\/a>.<\/p>\n The \u2064competition of the\u200c Giornate \u2013 which is also known as Venice Days \u2013 comprises 10 world premieres, six of which are first works, \u2064within a selection \u2062that artistic director Gaia Furrer described in her\u200c notes as \u201crigorous\u201d and \u201cstylistically\u200b eclectic.\u201d<\/p>\n Furrer underlined that 16 out of the section\u2019s 25 titles are directed by \u2064women, a fact she called significant \u201cbecause many of them made difficult works \u2064while\u2063 contending with often unfavorable situations and \u200dstill very solid gender barriers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n A diverse and eclectic lineup<\/p>\n The Venice Days competition also includes \u201cSanatorium Under the Sign of \u2064the Hourglass,\u201d the third feature by\u200c London-based stop-frame animation twins The Quay Brothers (Stephen and Timothy). It\u2019s a tale told through puppet animation and live-action, inspired by a book of\u2063 the same title by Bruno Schulz involving a ghostly \u2064train journey that transports a man to visit his dying father in a sanatorium at the edge of a mythic forest. Watch the trailer<\/a>.<\/p>\n Dutch director \u200dJan-Willem van Erik, whose epic \u201cAtlantic\u201d \u2064went to Toronto, is also in competition with psychological thriller \u201cAlpha,\u201d which revolves around a tormented father-son relationship and is set in the \u2064Swiss Alps. Watch the trailer<\/a>.<\/p>\n Standout first works include\u200d atmospheric French drama \u201cThe Book\u2062 of Joy\u201d by Camille Lugan, a former AD to \u2063Jacques Audiard, with a cast comprising Asia Argento and Rapha\u00ebl Thi\u00e9ry (\u201cThe Dreamer\u201d); Iranian director Shahab Fotouhi\u2019s \u200bTehran-set relationship\u2064 drama \u201cBoomerang\u201d; and the section\u2019s out-of-competition closer \u201cBasileia\u201d\u200d by Isabella Torre, which was developed in the Sundance lab and produced by\u2062 Jonas Carpignano. \u201cBasileia\u201d is about an archaeologist who, while exploring a tomb in\u200c Southern Italy\u2019s rugged \u200cAspromonte mountains, awakens ancient presences. The cast includes Angela Fontana (\u201cIndivisibili\u201d) and Danish American actor \u2062Elliott Crosset Hove (\u201cGodland\u201d). Watch the trailer<\/a>.<\/p>\n Special events and short films<\/p>\n Besides \u201cPeaches Goes \u2063Bananas,\u201d\u200c Venice Days special events include Federica Di Giacomo\u2019s \u201cOpen Couple,\u201d a farce about \u2063sexual politics in marriage \u200cbased on a play by Dario Fo, the Nobel \u200dPrize-winning Italian playwright, and his wife Franca Rame. Watch the trailer<\/a>.<\/p>\n Shorts by Malaysian director Tan \u200bChi Mui (\u201cBarbarian Invasion\u201d) and Argentine director-producer Laura Citarella (\u201cTrenque Lauquen\u201d) will unspool as part of \u200bthe\u2063 Prada-commissioned Miu Miu Women\u2019s Tales, a series of short films directed by women.
