\tSpain\u2019s Latido Films has acquired Eva Libertad\u2018s upcoming feature \u201cSorda,\u201d adapted from her 2023 Spanish Academy Goya Award-nominated short of the same name.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cSorda,\u201d which translates to \u201cdeaf\u201d in English, tells the story of Angela, a pregnant deaf woman, and Hector, her hearing partner. Pregnancy brings to the surface her fears about motherhood and how she will be able to communicate with her daughter. The arrival of the girl generates a crisis in the couple and leads Angela to face the upbringing of her daughter in a world that is not made for her.<\/p>\n
\tLibertad wrote and is directing the film, a continuation of her 2023 short of the same name that starred her sister, Miriam Garlo. In addition to a Spanish Academy Goya nomination, the film was selected by more than 110 festivals and won more than 60 awards. \t<\/p>\n
\t\u201cA few years ago, my sister began to consider becoming a mother,\u201d Libertad said of the story\u2019s origins. \u201cWe talked about it a lot, and she shared with me her concerns, fears and expectations about motherhood in a world made by and for listeners. These conversations became the dramatic core of the script for the short film \u2018Sorda.\u2019 <\/p>\n
\t\t\t \t\t\tPopular on Variety\t\t \t \t\t \t \t\u201cThe experience of writing and directing the short was intense and revealing. As a screenwriter, it was my first contact with the theme of motherhood and deafness, which left me with the feeling that there was a lot to tell in Angela\u2019s story. I also saw the impact that this story has on the listening public, who are shocked by the discovery of a reality that had never been considered before,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cSorda\u201d stars Garlo, who shined in the original short, two-time Goya nominated actor \u00c1lvaro Cervantes (\u201cAdu,\u201d \u201cThe Hanged Man\u201d) and 2024 San Sebastian Zinemira Award recipient Elena Irureta (\u201cPatria\u201d).<\/p>\n
\tInspired by the short film\u2019s successful festival run, reception from the public and the sensitivity with which it addressed its subject matter inspired Goya and Gaudi-winning producer Miriam Port\u00e9 to board the feature version. Co-producers include Nuria Mu\u00f1oz Ort\u00edn for Nexus CreaFilms \u2013 which produced the \u201cSorda\u201d short \u2013 and Amalia Blanco for A Contracorriente Films (\u201cLa librer\u00eda\u201d).<\/p>\n
