\tIn \u201cCarry-On,\u201d Sofia Carson plays Nora, the pregnant girlfriend of Ethan (Taron Egerton), a TSA agent at LAX who has been blackmailed to take part in a plot to take down a plane with chemical weapons stashed in carry-on luggage.<\/p>\n
\tNora also works at the airport and the blackmailer (Jason Bateman) threatens to have her killed if Ethan doesn\u2019t do what he says.<\/p>\n
\tCarson received the script after her romantic drama \u201cPurple Hearts,\u201d became a huge hit on Netflix in 2022. \u201cI remember reading the headline, which was \u2018Carry-On, action, thriller, starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman as the villain, that takes place at LAX, produced by Amblin, Steven Spielberg,\u2019\u201d she tells me on the latest episode of the \u201cJust for Variety\u201d podcast. \u201cAnd then in quotations, or in parentheses, was \u2018Die Hard.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Say no more, say no more.\u2019\u201d \t<\/p>\n
\t\t\t \t\t\tPopular on Variety\t\t \t \t\t \t \t \t\tThis is the ultimate what-would-you-do movie.\t \tIt\u2019s an extraordinary circumstance. It\u2019s an impossible situation to be in. I\u2019d like to say that I would do everything that Ethan did, but my God, what a terrifying place to be in.<\/p>\n
\t \t\tIs \u201cCarry-On\u201d a Christmas movie?\t \tIt\u2019s whatever you want it to be for yourself. And I think [co-star] Danielle [Deadwyler] said something so brilliant. She said, \u201cThis is a Christmaction movie.\u201d And that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to say from now on. But I do think \u201cDie Hard\u201d is such a beloved Christmas film for a huge population, and I think that Christmas films can have different genres. One of them is action, and this is an action Christmas film.<\/p>\n
\t \t\tWhat is it about Christmas and action films?\t \tIt\u2019s a great question. I actually think it brings together two really beloved and two really universal genres. Action movies, travel, the entire universe. It doesn\u2019t matter what language you speak, what culture, what country you live in. Everyone loves an action thriller and everyone loves a holiday film because it\u2019s just warm and comforting and brings us all together. So I think in bringing both of those genres together, you\u2019re in essence bringing the world together.<\/p>\n
\t \t\tShould people watch this before they head to the airport to travel home for Christmas?\t \tI think they should. When I finished filming this movie, I left seeing airports in entirely different light, but in a good way \u2014 in terms of what it takes to be a TSA agent, to be an airport operations director, to be every single person at every level that works at an airport, and the sacrifices they make and the extents that they go to, the lengths to keep us safe. When people watch this film, I hope they go into their holiday travels with a heart full of empathy for all airport workers. \t<\/p>\n
\t \t\tI love when Ethan saves the day when there are just two seconds before the bombs go off.\t \tTaron is so excellent at that. When the world first saw him in \u201cKingsman,\u201d we were like, \u201cWow, this guy is a star.\u201d And I think what\u2019s so special about Ethan Kopek is that he is your regular everyday guy who\u2019s actually almost\u2026 he\u2019s lost in life. He\u2019s lost his way. He\u2019s lost a sense of who he is. He\u2019s put in this extraordinary circumstance and he does extraordinary things. And he\u2019s just this regular guy. He plays that so well, so rounded, so layered, so complex \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s really, really thrilling to watch as an audience.<\/p>\n
\t \t\tWere you on set the day Jason Bateman died in the refrigerator?\t \tI was not, but how epic is that?<\/p>\n
\t \t\tIt\u2019s going to go down as a classic killing.\t \tWow. That\u2019s a lot to say.<\/p>\n
\t \t\tIt\u2019s so absurd.\t \tEspecially at the line at the end when Danielle is like, \u201cWhere\u2019s the guy?\u201d And he goes, \u201cIn the fridge.\u201d \u201cWhere\u2019s the bomb?\u201d \u201cSame fridge.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t \t\tThen he comes out of the plane and Danielle\u2019s like, \u201cEveryone get on hazmat suits.\u201d But Ethan kisses Nora. That stuff from the chemical weapon could be on him.\t \tYou\u2019re right. I hadn\u2019t thought of that! Marc, this is a movie. Don\u2019t think of those things.<\/p>\n
\t \t\tI know we haven\u2019t spoken about this in a while, but has there been any talk on a \u201cPurple Hearts\u201d sequel? When are we going to see it?\t \tThere are conversations. That\u2019s all I\u2019ll say.<\/p>\n
\t \t\tYou want it to happen?\t \tI love Cassie, and I loved making this film, and I feel so passionate and so protective of it. So I\u2019m very protective of how and if the sequel happens But it\u2019s extraordinary that I get asked so much about it. Even just that is a gift. I know fans really loved it.<\/p>\n
