\tTilda Swinton will be celebrated by the Berlin Film festival with its Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThe range of Tilda Swinton\u2019s work is breathtaking,\u201d said the festival\u2019s artistic director Tricia Tuttle in a statement. \u201cTo cinema she brings so much humanity, compassion, intelligence, humour and style, and she expands our ideas of the world through her work,\u201d Tuttle added. <\/p>\n
\t\u201cTilda is one of our modern filmmaking idols, and has also long been part of the Berlinale family. We are delighted to be able to present her with this Honorary Golden Bear,\u201d she went on to note. <\/p>\n
\tThe award will be presented to Swinton during the fest\u2019s opening ceremony at the Berlinale Palast on Feb. 13, 2025. \t<\/p>\n
\t\t\t \t\t\tPopular on Variety\t\t \t \t\t \t \t\u201cThe Berlinale is the first film festival I ever went to, in 1986 with Derek Jarman and the first film I made, his\u00a0\u201cCaravaggio,\u201d said Swinton. <\/p>\n
\t\u201cIt was my portal into the world in which I have made my life\u2019s work \u2013 the world of international filmmaking \u2013 and I have never forgotten the debt I owe it,\u201d she added. \u201cTo be honored in this way by this particular festival is deeply touching for me: it will be my privilege and pleasure to celebrate, once more next February, the seedbed that is this wide-eyed and reliably wonderful gathering.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tSwinton has had close ties to the Berlinale for many years. She\u2019s starred in 26 films in the festival\u2019s selection, ranging from\u00a0\u201cCaravaggio,\u201d which won the Belin Silver Bear in 1986, to\u00a0\u201cThe Beach\u201d\u00a0(2000);\u00a0\u201cDerek\u201d\u00a0(2008);\u00a0\u201cJulia\u201d\u00a0(2008);\u00a0\u201cThe Garden\u201d\u00a0(1991) and\u00a0\u201cLast and First Men\u201d\u00a0(2020).<\/p>\n
\tSwinton also presided over the Berlinale\u2019s main jury in 2009.<\/p>\n
\tSwinton more recently\u00a0appeared in Wes Anderson\u2019s\u00a0\u201cAsteroid City\u201d\u00a0(2023) \u2013 marking their fifth collaboration \u2013 and in George Miller\u2019s\u00a0\u201cThree Thousand Years of Longing\u201d\u00a0(2022); David Fincher\u2019s\u00a0\u201cThe Killer\u201d\u00a0(2023);\u00a0Joshua Oppenheimer\u2019s\u00a0\u201cThe End\u201d\u00a0(2024) and\u00a0\u201cThe Room Next Door\u201d\u00a0(2024), which is her second collaboration with Pedro Almod\u00f3var. Swinton just finished shooting\u00a0\u201cThe Ballad of a Small Player\u201d\u00a0with Edward Berger for Netflix.<\/p>\n
