\tThe Robbie Williams song \u201cForbidden Road\u201d from \u201cBetter Man,\u201d shortlisted earlier this week for best original song, has been disqualified, Variety has learned.<\/p>\n
\tThe song, insiders report, \u201cincorporates material from an existing song that was not written for the film\u201d and so has been deemed ineligible for Oscar.<\/p>\n
\tAcademy rules state that the words and music of any song submitted for awards consideration must be \u201coriginal and written specifically for the motion picture.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tThe melody of \u201cForbidden Road\u201d contains marked similarities to that of \u201cI Got a Name,\u201d the Charles Fox-Norman Gimbel song performed by Jim Croce in the 1973 film \u201cThe Last American Hero.\u201d Coincidentally, Fox is one of three governors of the Academy\u2019s music branch. \t<\/p>\n
\tA letter went out to the 400-plus members of the music branch this morning. Reportedly the similarities just came to the attention of the branch executive committee this week, and the decision to drop the song came yesterday afternoon. <\/p>\n
\t\t\t \t\t\tPopular on Variety\t\t \t \t\t \t \tNoted the letter: \u201cThis is a decision that both honors our rules and protects the special nature of the Original Song and Score categories.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tThis means the original song shortlist will be trimmed to 14 titles from the previous 15. Disqualifications like this generally do not result in a \u201creplacement\u201d song.
