\tOn social media, viewers praised Hozier\u2019s emotional cover of the song that has become a Christmas standard since it was released in 1987, finding it a fitting tribute to the Pogues\u2019 singer Shane MacGowan, who died in 2013, as well as to the late Kristy MacColl, who dueted with MacGowan on the song. <\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien was referring to a line in the original lyrics of the song, now considered offensive: \u201cYou scumbag, you maggot, You cheap lousy faggot.\u201d \t<\/p>\n
\t\t\t \t\t\tPopular on Variety\t\t \t \t\t \t \tHozier and his backup singers instead sang \u201cYou scumbag, you maggot, you\u2019re cheap and you\u2019re haggard,\u201d and one singer gave a big wink during the changed lyric. As early as 1992, MacColl was performing the song with the same lyric change. The line \u201cYou\u2019re an old slut on junk\u201d has also understandably been lost along the way.<\/p>\n
\tMacGowan, who reportedly may have written the song in response to Elvis Costello challenging him to come up with a Christmas song, once described \u201cFairytale\u201d as being about \u201cthese old Irish-American Broadway stars who are sitting round at Christmas talking about whether things are going okay.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tHozier\u2019s first performance on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d was \u201cToo Sweet\u201d from his 2024 EP \u201cUnheard.\u201d<\/p>\n
