\tThe satirical comedy series about the making of a superhero movie was created by Jon Brown (\u201cSuccession,\u201d \u201cVeep\u201d) and executive produced by Sam Mendes (\u201c1917,\u201d \u201cSkyfall\u201d) and Armando Iannucci (\u201cVeep\u201d).<\/p>\n
\tThe series starred Himesh Patel as a frazzled first assistant director on a big-budget movie that is a minor installment in a larger superhero franchise. Aya Cash, Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein and Isaac Powell rounded out the ensemble, and Richard E. Grant and Daniel Br\u00fchl were recurring cast members. <\/p>\n
\t\u201cWe\u2019re so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the tremendously talented team behind\u00a0\u2018The Franchise,\u2019 especially Sam Mendes, Jon Brown, Armando Iannucci, and this hilarious ensemble of actors,\u201d an HBO spokesperson said in a statement to Variety. \u201cWhile we won\u2019t be moving forward with another season, we look forward to collaborating with all of them in the future.\u201d \t<\/p>\n
\t\t\t \t\t\tPopular on Variety\t\t \t \t\t \t \t\u201cThe Franchise\u201d premiered on Oct. 6 and aired eight half-hour episodes weekly on the cable network.<\/p>\n
\tVariety chief TV critic Alison Herman gave \u201cThe Franchise\u201d a mixed review, writing that what the show brings to the table \u201cis not fresh insight into the problems that ail popular culture, but the well-honed cynicism of a comedy coaching tree.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThe half-hour series spews its bile with eloquence and conviction that provide their own momentum, at least to start,\u201d Herman continued. \u201cBut ultimately, \u2018The Franchise\u2019 is more of a (vociferous, amusing) reaction to the zeitgeist than an entity unto itself.\u201d<\/p>\n
