In recent years, K-pop has taken the world by storm, with groups like BTS and Blackpink leading the charge. However, the industry is now facing a slowdown after a period of explosive growth. Despite this, CJ ENM, one of South Korea’s largest entertainment conglomerates, remains undeterred in its ambitions. The company continues to invest heavily in its diverse K-content slate, which includes music, movies, TV shows, merchandise, and K-beauty products.

CJ ENM recently wrapped up its annual three-day KCON LA 2024 fan convention and concert event in Los Angeles. Held at the Los Angeles Convention Center and Crypto.com Arena, the event drew significant attention, including a live broadcast special on the CW network. The highlight of the event was a surprise appearance by actor Awkwafina during the July 28 concert.

While CJ ENM did not disclose specific attendance figures or ticket sales, the company reported that approximately 5.9 million fans from over 170 countries participated in KCON LA 2024, either in person or through digital platforms. The event, which coincided with San Diego Comic-Con, attracted thousands of ardent fans from the U.S., Europe, and other international locations. However, general foot traffic at the daytime event appeared to be lower compared to previous years.

During KCON LA 2024, CJ ENM unveiled its latest project, Planet B, set to debut in 2025 on CJ ENM’s Mnet channel in South Korea and through licensing deals in Japan and other markets. The show aims to launch new K-pop artists and received significant promotion during the KCON concerts and daytime conference. According to Harry H.K. Shin, CJ ENM’s head of music entertainment, the company has been conducting auditions to discover new talent, including solo and group artists.

“We’re always on the lookout for talent,” Shin stated, emphasizing the company’s commitment to nurturing new K-pop stars.

CJ ENM is set to test the waters for K-pop in Western Europe with the upcoming KCON Frankfurt event in September. Despite recent stock losses for key K-pop companies like Hybe and SM Entertainment, CJ ENM’s stock has seen a 7% increase year-to-date on South Korea’s Kosdaq exchange.

As BTS members complete their mandatory military service, Shin believes that the K-pop fandom will continue to grow and diversify. He noted that a wider range of male and female performers are attracting dedicated followings outside Korea, contrasting with the U.S. fandom’s heavy focus on BTS.

“A lot of K-pop artists are creating fandoms in their own regions,” Shin said. “We see the growth opportunity in K-pop, K-culture, K-drama, and all other genres.”

One of the standout features of KCON is the in-person meet-and-greet component, which allows fans to connect directly with their favorite artists. Shin highlighted the rarity of such opportunities, making KCON a unique event for K-pop enthusiasts.

“It’s rare to meet a lot of different artists in one setting face to face,” Shin explained. “KCON could be the one and only venue for fans to meet all the various artists at one time face to face.”

Shin expressed confidence in the potential for K-pop to thrive in Europe, citing existing fandoms in countries like Germany, England, and France. He emphasized that Germany, in particular, is one of the largest markets in the music industry, making it a prime location for expanding K-pop’s reach.

“We have a lot of fandoms already in Europe,” Shin said. “Germany is one of the largest markets in the music industry. With a lot of fandoms there already, this could be a really good opportunity to expand our market.”

The KCON LA 2024 concerts featured performances by popular K-pop acts such as Enhyphen, Jeon Somi, ZeroBaseOne, Bibi, NCT 127, StayC, Hyolyn, Ini, ME:I, TWS, and Zico. Shin emphasized that KCON uses music as a means to achieve a larger purpose, which involves fostering growth through collaborations with entertainment giants outside Asia.

“Our mission is to promote and let the world know about our culture through the K-pop fan base,” Shin said. “We are really happy to collaborate with other media. We’re really interested in building strong collaborations with other media.”

As K-pop continues to evolve and expand its global footprint, CJ ENM remains at the forefront of this cultural phenomenon. With ambitious projects like Planet B and the upcoming KCON Frankfurt, the company is poised to further solidify K-pop’s place on the world stage. For fans and industry observers alike, the future of K-pop promises to be an exciting journey filled with new talent, innovative collaborations, and unforgettable experiences.

For more information on the mentioned artists and events, check out the following links:

CJ ENM’s KCON LA 2024 drew 5.9 million fans globally, showcasing K-pop’s enduring appeal.
